Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. Now that the holidays are over, it’s time for the Christmas decorations to come down. This time of year is always so sad when lights, trees, and holly-jolly decor are no more. But your home doesn’t need to feel boring after Christmas; you can still create a warm and cozy vibe with my winter decor ideas in this post.
There is nothing like the feeling of being snug inside while it’s still cold and dark outside!
Christmas vs. Winter Decor
Christmas and winter decor have some similarities that can cross over with one another. Christmas decorations include “Merry Christmas” items, bells, ornaments, nutcrackers, nativity scenes, Santa Claus, etc. – the usual mascots of Christmas. Generally, decor with red, green, and gold also are categorized as Christmas-y.
Winter decor is more neutral and fresh. Think snow, ice, evergreen forests, and warmth. When decorating for winter, I like to use items with softer, more neutral tones like white, cream, gray, and icy blues.
By shifting from Christmas decor to winter decor, you can transition your home into a calm, seasonal retreat while keeping it fresh and inviting.
When to Remove Christmas Decor
When you want to remove your Christmas decor is really a personal preference. You can take it down the day after Christmas or leave it up to enjoy for a bit longer. My general rule of thumb is that it should all be removed no later than mid-January!
One of my favorite things to do is to take the ornaments off of the Christmas tree but leave it up with the lights for a few more days. There is just something about the ambiance of twinkle lights at night and early morning!
Christmas Decor Storage Tips
Now that Christmas is over, it’s time to put away all of those decorations! Why does it feel like every year I need more and more storage?! Oh, probably because I can’t help myself from buying cute Christmas trendy decor!
If you’re like me, I want to share some tips for storing Christmas decor. I’ve found some great items to keep me organized when it’s time to put away the decorations.

Christmas to Winter Decor Ideas
Greenery
Fresh or faux greenery can be used all year round, but I especially love it in the wintertime. While garland and Christmas trees can come down, you can still use greenery in vases, pots, or centerpieces. I love using eucalyptus, succulents, branches, berries, and pinecones in the winter!
Layers
Layer textures to add warmth and comfort. Add a chunky blanket to sofas, chairs, and beds. Layer rugs to keep those toes warm!
Lighting
One of the biggest things I miss after Christmas decor is put away is the soft lighting of a Christmas tree. This doesn’t have to go away with the holiday though!
Group pillar candles in a bunch, place votives throughout your home, and light the fireplace to create a warm ambiance.
Winter-themed Art
Swap out your artwork with winter landscapes. You can get affordable artwork prints or digital downloads from Etsy.com. Simply download and print the artwork at a local print shop, then replace it in your already hung frames.
Such a unique, affordable way to add a touch of winter to your decor!
Seasonal Flowers
Add seasonal winter flowers throughout your home to add a touch of freshness. Paperwhites or amaryllis are my favorite post-Christmas flowers!
Winter Scents
This one is my favorite! Use diffusers, potpourri, or candles with scents like cedarwood, vanilla, or cinnamon to create a welcoming ambiance. This pine scent candle is one of my favorites!
Winter Wreath
Swap out your Christmas wreath on the front door with a winter wreath with berries and cool winter colors. I am loving my blue and white DIY winter wreath this season!
As fun as it is to decorate and celebrate Christmas, once the holiday comes to a close, it’s nice to get the house back in order. With the colder weather still among us, I try to keep my home cozy and warm by transitioning my Christmas to winter decor. I hope these tips help you do the same!
