I love a good thrift find! It’s been one of my favorite hobbies lately due to the thrill of finding a good thrifted item worth something. It’s true that one man’s trash is another one’s treasure!
Using thrifted items in your home is good for the environment (reuse!), is affordable, and adds character to your decor. I love that the items I find could be vintage, antique, or items that are no longer made. It’s so much better than everyone else’s Target lamp, right?!
Some of my favorite places to find thrifted home decor is Goodwill, local thrift shops, Facebook Marketplace, and Craigslist.
If you’re a new or seasoned thrifted, I hope these tips will help you find the best thrifted home finds at your local thrift shop.
The Best Thrifted Home Finds to Search For
When I go to a thrift store, there are sections that I always dart directly to and never pass up. These areas have the best items worth more than they often are priced for.
Baskets
Good baskets at thrift stores go quickly, so when you see one in good shape, grab it! You can never have too many baskets to help with storage and organization.
When you bring the basket home, give it a good wash by spraying it down with the hose. You can also use a damp sponge and dish soap to thoroughly clean it. Let it dry out in the sun before using it in your home.
Furniture
I always look in the furniture section for real wood furniture. You can get some great buys on these items that you can use as-is in your home or can easily be painted or refurbished for an updated look.
The nightstands I refinished in our primary bedroom are thrifted from Facebook Marketplace. I got both wooden nightstands for only $40 and painted them with latex paint.
Frames
Picture frames are a great buy at thrift stores, especially if you can find a set of matching ones!
I purchased the set of 4 frames that I made intaglio wall art with for $2 a frame at my local Goodwill. I flipped these and sold them on Etsy for $100!
Lamps
Almost every single lamp in my house is thrifted because these buys are too good to pass up. Most of the lamps I’ve purchased at thrift stores are between $3-$5. I usually skip the lampshade and buy a new one to match, which makes the lamp look brand new!
This blue and white chinoiserie lamp was thrifted from Goodwill for only $2.99!
Mirrors
Mirrors are sneakily expensive, but not at the thrift store! I’ve seen some really awesome mirrors at my local Goodwill for $5!
Pottery
If you can find vintage pottery like old crocks or vases, you have won the jackpot! Thrifted pottery is unique and versatile. You can use it for vases, utensil holders, flower pots, storage, or decor.
I use old crocks throughout my home and love how classic they are!
Glassware
Because thrift stores often get a lot of glassware, you can find some good items for cheap! I found Waterford crystal glasses for $0.50 each! Either keep these or flip them for a profit by reselling them on eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
I love finding unique glassware to convert into flower pots or teacup candles!
Notes About Thrifted Home Decor
There are a few tips and tricks that you should consider when going thrifting for home decor.
If you like it, grab it!
Items can go quickly at thrift stores and you never know if it will still be there if you pass it up. If you’re interested in an item, put it in your cart before making the decision.
It’s best to assume if you don’t purchase it this trip that it will be gone next time you come back to the store.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate
If an item is damaged, ask the staff if there is anything they can do price-wise to help you purchase it. Often they want to get rid of items, so they may give you some money off. It’s always worth asking!
Give it a good wash
When you bring the thrifted item home, it’s a good idea to give it a good wash down with some soapy water and a sponge. You don’t know where it came from so it’s a good rule of thumb to clean it up as soon as you get home.
Learn the schedule
Learn when each thrift store puts out new items. My Goodwills are constantly restocking so being the first one there doesn’t always make a difference. However, I’ve noticed earlier in the week is a good day to go since more donations occur over the weekend.
If you’re unsure when a thrift store restocks, simply ask the staff and they will happily help you!
