This post is all about how to make a DIY laundry room makeover on a budget. This full laundry room remodel cost less than $100. This laundry room makeover before and after will amaze you!
Gosh, when we first moved into our home, our laundry room was so sad! The wire racks and beige walls made me not want to do laundry even more than I already don’t want to. Does anyone actually like doing laundry…?
Well, I knew a stylish laundry room would at least be enjoyable to look at and be in when I do have to do the laundry. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on this project because being a new homeowner there are A LOT of things to buy.
So if you’re asking yourself the same question as me: how can I make my laundry room look nice? This blog post will inspire you to remodel your laundry room with wallpaper and new shelves.
The exact steps to a DIY laundry room makeover on a budget
Before you begin your laundry room makeover, it’s crucial to plan and budget for what you want. I was able to cut costs by using peel-and-stick wallpaper and making shelf covers for my wire racks. This was also very non-commital of me… because let’s be real, I change my mind sometimes! I wanted to spend around $100 or less on this project and was able to do so with the steps below! I hope you give some of these tips a try and they inspire you to makeover your laundry room too.
Measure your space before purchasing any supplies, so you know how much of each item to purchase!
Peel and Stick Wallpaper Laundry Room
To make this project super quick and easy, I opted for peel-and-stick wallpaper. We’ve had the wallpaper up for 3 years now and it’s been perfect ever since installation! I used the Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines Willow Grey wallpaper, but you can use any type your little heart desires.
Some of my favorite brands of peel-and-stick wallpaper are:
- Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines
- Spoonflower
- NuWallpaper
My little budget tip here is to look for rolls of wallpaper on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Because most laundry rooms are small, you can often get away with just 1 or 2 rolls. I found my wallpaper on eBay for $30 per roll, which saved me $20!
How to Install Peel and Stick Wallpaper
If you’ve never used peel-and-stick wallpaper before, you are missing out! This stuff is easy to install. Whoever invented this idea is a genius!
Supplies & Tools:
- Wallpaper (I use Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines Willow Grey Peel and Stick Wallpaper)
- Wallpaper Scraper
- Utility Knife
- Level
To start, measure and cut the wallpaper to the height of the wall that you are covering. Add a few inches for the top and bottom to allow to adjustments.
Pick a side of the wall to start on. Measure the width of the wallpaper and measure the distance from the edge of the wall. Using your level and a straight edge, draw a light line down the wall with a pencil. This will be your guide for the first sheet of wallpaper. The first one must be level as the remaining pieces will align with this one.
Peel a small portion of wallpaper off the backing (about 6″ to a foot). Place the wallpaper on the wall with some of it slightly covering the ceiling (don’t worry – this is going to be removed). Align it with the straight line you drew.
Slowly press the wallpaper onto the wall and peel off the backing as you make your way down the wall. Press the wallpaper down and remove any bubbles using a wallpaper scraper. I find doing this as I attach the wallpaper is much easier than after.
Repeat this process and match up edges and patterns as you layer the wallpaper across the wall.
Once you have the whole wall completed, trim excess pieces along the walls and ceiling using a utility knife. This will make your wallpaper look clean and finished!
Since it’s peel-and-stick wallpaper, you can always go back and readjust, but I highly recommend taking the time to set yourself up for success before installation and during. Go slowly to ensure you have very straight lines and you match the patterns up with new sheets.
Wooden Wire Shelf Covers For Laundry Room
Our laundry room has wire shelves and they are not the vibe!! Again, being very noncommittal in this DIY project, I made a wooden wire shelf cover for the wire rack.
Supplies & Tools
- 1x3x8 Common Board
- 1x12x8 Common Board
- Wood Glue
- Wood Stain
I used Common Board for this project because I was trying to do this on a tight budget. For a higher-end look, you can use better wood such as oak.
To start, I measured the wire rack and captured the dimensions. I cut the 1x12x8 Common Board and 1x3x8 Common Board to the necessary lengths.
Attach the 1×3 board to the side edge of the 1×12 board using wood glue. They are perpendicular to each other so it covers the front of the wire rack. I did not use any nails or screws to attach the two pieces, because I wanted it to look seamless. (Note: I’ve had this wooden rack cover in my laundry room for 3 years and no issues with this method!).
Allow the wood glue to dry. Lastly, I stained my wooden wire rack cover using Varathane Classic Wood Stain in Golden Pecan. I applied it with a brush and then smoothed it out with an old rag.
Allow the wood stain to dry for a full 24 hours before handling. Place the wooden rack cover over the wire shelf.
Hang Additional Shelving in the Laundry Room
The last step to hand a basic shelf was the most straightforward. I wanted one more shelf right above the washer and dryer to provide more storage area.
Supplies & Tools
- 1x10x8 Common Board
- Shelf Brackets
- Bracket Screws
- Wood Stain
Cut the 1x10x8 Common Board to the length of the wall. Stain the wood using a paintbrush and wipe it off with a rag.
Meanwhile, find your studs on the wall and mark them with a pencil. Use a level to align where you want to drill the shelf brackets into. We used two shelf brackets to support the wood.
Attach the shelf brackets to the studs using a power drill and bracket screws. Use the longer bracket screws (#7 x 1-1/4 in.) to attach the shelf brackets to the studs. Next, attach the wood shelf to the top of the brackets using the #7 x 1/2 in. screws.
