When I tell you this navy shiplap bathroom took 6 months to complete, I am not exaggerating! DIYs have their pros and cons. Personally, the hardest part of this whole bathroom was choosing a color!
Because I know this house isn’t our forever home, I have not put much time, energy, or money into it. But the white on white in our bathroom was such a drag! I tried to make it look more custom by framing in the builder-grade mirror, but it just wasn’t enough for me. We needed texture and color!
The Before

Looking back on this picture, I don’t even think I realized how bad it was! When I decided our primary bathroom needed a major upgrade from it’s builder-grade design, I knew immediately I wanted color and texture. I decided on vertical shiplap to add a twist on the traditional paneling.
Vertical Shiplap Bathroom Wall
If you missed my whole post on how to install vertical shiplap, make sure you go back and check it out. I share my tips and tricks that I learned along the way to help you DIY your own shiplap wall too.

I considered leaving the shiplap white because I loved how the black mirrors and handles contrasted. But after thinking about it more and more, it needed some color!
I think I may have grabbed every single paint sample from Sherwin Williams in the navy blue color scheme.

Ultimately we ended up with three colors we really liked: Smoky Blue, Rainstorm, and Moscow Midnight (left to right in image below).
Pro tip: always get the paint sample and test it on the walls. In my experience, paint always looks different on the wall than it does on the swatch. It’s worth the money!

We decided on Rainstorm by Sherwin Williams for the color to paint the shiplap. It felt like the perfect navy blue with a tint of green but not so much it was a pure teal color.

I loved how this turned out! It totally transformed out white, builder-grade bathroom!
My biggest issue at this point though was the black hardware and mirrors not matching. I am all for blue and black in some instances but it felt they clashed too much. I decided to swap the hardware for similar pulls in a brushed nickel finish to match the faucets and light fixtures.
It was such a challenge for me to find mirrors my husband and I could agree on (he oddly has opinions on these things?) and fit the space. Because we have an outlet next to the sink on the left, I could not go with a rectangular mirror as it would cover the outlet. So my options were oval or round mirrors.
Doing this as a DIY, I was also not trying to spend too much on mirrors. They can get pretty pricey!
Ultimately, after many trials and errors, we ended up going with these round wood mirrors from Target. And I bought these just at the right time because at the time writing this blog post about 2 weeks later, they are sold out! Here are some affordable similar ones that I found that from Home Depot, Walmart, and Amazon.

The Final Navy Shiplap Bathroom Reveal

To finish off the navy shiplap bathroom, I added this Rifle Paper Co. rug in Nightengale. It says it’s black but it pulls more navy to me. I also added light yellow hand towels to compliment the rug and the navy.
Overall, I am so excited how this primary bathroom in navy vertical shiplap turned out! I hope this gives you inspiration to go for bold colors in your home too.
