It seems like painted candlesticks and floral design candles are all over the place right now. In fact, I just bought some floral printed candles from Target last week without realizing how easy it would have been to paint candles for much cheaper myself. The Anthropologie Faye Taper Candles were my inspiration for creating my own painted candlesticks.
I wanted to create painted candlesticks with floral designs for my Springtime decor. After researching how easy it is to make these, I learned I already have everything on hand (and I bet you do too!).
How to Make DIY Painted Candles
To make painted candlesticks, you likely already have everything you need. I will be sharing the tips and tricks to making professional-looking hand painted candles. It’s really easy!
The beauty of this DIY is that you can use any colors and designs you want to match your decor. I made my candles for Springtime but I love the idea of tailoring these for a holiday like Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
What kind of paint do you use on candlesticks?
Acrylic paint can be used to paint on wax candles. Use a water-based, non-toxic acrylic paint to add your designs to the candles. This will be the safest option when burning the candles. Paint away from the wick so it doesn’t burn directly on the paint.
One of my favorite acrylic paints is Apple Barrel brand. This kit comes in a variety of colors to match any design you are going for.
Painted Candles DIY
Materials
- Candlesticks – Hobby Lobby is a great place to get candlesticks for cheap!
- Acrylic Paint
- Thin paint brushes
- Paint Tray
- Wax or parchment paper
Step 1: Remove packaging and stickers from candles.
Step 2: Plan your design.
It’s a good idea to have a general idea of the design and size before putting paint on the candle. This will allow you to space out evenly and get a nice finished look!
Step 3: Paint the candles.
The fun part! Start to paint the candles using your fine-tip brushes. To make floral designs, simply layer small dots of paint. Trust me, I don’t have many painting skills so I went with more simpler designs by just adding dots to make floral designs.
Place candles on wax paper or parchment paper to dry. Acrylic paint is pretty fast drying so you should be able to handle your candles within a couple of hours.
Other tips while painting candles
- If you make a mistake while painting, use your finger or a paper towel to wipe off the paint from the candle. Use your fingernail to remove any dried paint.
- Avoid painting near the wick of the candle. You won’t want the acrylic paint to burn directly.
This is a great DIY to do for your own decor or they make great gifts! On my next girl’s craft night, we are definitely going to be painting candles.
