As we approach warmer days, I get eager to give my screened-in porch patio a refresh so we can enjoy it before the extreme heat in the south. After the winter season, our porch always seems to look so grimy and dingy. There are a few things I always make sure to do on our patio before putting it to good use in the springtime, and I am sharing those with you!
I hope this post inspires you to refresh your patio or porch in time for the new season!
1. Declutter

This is the time to remove any old cushions, pillows, tables, and rugs on your patio. It certainly seems like those porch pillows only get a couple of seasons out of them before they get gross! Throw out any old, dirty items that need to be replaced.
2. Clean

Do not skip this step!! Yes, this step actually takes some time and effort, but it is SO worth it.
To thoroughly clean my porch, I generally remove all items. Then I sweep the floor to get out any dirt and debris. After a good sweep, I powerwash the floor and wash the exterior windows.
While I have the powerwasher out, I generally also give my furniture and rug a good wash too. Leave it all out in the sun to dry before putting it back on the patio. If you don’t have a powerwasher, use warm soapy water and a sponge to clean the outdoor furniture.
3. Update Furniture & Finishings

Replace any old, dirty items that you threw out in step 1 with fresh new items. You’d be shocked what new outdoor pillows can do to a space! Some of my favorite places to find affordable outdoor decor are Target, Home Depot, Home Goods, and Wayfair.
If your furniture is still in fairly good condition but just needs a refresh, consider repainting or restaining them. Teak furniture, which is often used outside, can be re-oiled with Teak Oil to bring it back to life.
4. Add Lighting

Create a warm, welcoming ambiance by adding lights to your patio. Some of my favorite ways to add lighting include:
- hang string lights
- add lanterns with real or faux pillar candles
- add solar lights around paths and trees
- upgrade porch scones
Adding lighting to your patio is a sure way to create a space you’ll want to continue using at night!
5. Incorporate Plants

You are outside so go ahead and add some plants and flowers! Grab some planters and place them around the perimeter of the patio. Another way I love to refresh my patio is by hanging planters to put seasonal greenery and flowers in.
Additional Porch Refresh Ideas
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention these additional ideas for a refreshed patio! I wouldn’t necessarily call these easy, but they will definitely make an impact on your outdoor space.
Fire Features
Firepit, fireplace, fire features – really any of these will bring a warm ambience to your outdoor patio!
If you have an uncovered space, a firepit is a great addition. Get a smokeless firepit to burn real wood without the mess. Or I love a gas firepit table to use dual function: table during the day, fire at night.
Water Features
There is something about the sound of water that is just so relaxing! Add a fish pond, a bird bath, or fountain nearby to incorporate water features near your patio.
Screen It In
If your porch is not screened it and you live in a location where you can utilize outdoor space majority of the year, you may want to consider screening it in. Living in the south, we love using our screened in porch to stay away from the mosquitos and bugs!
Privacy
Consider adding some privacy elements if your home is close to a neighbor’s. For exposed patios, install a trellis that you can grow vines along. Or for a screened in porch, hang curtains or custom blinds.

I start to get my patio ready for the spring and summer season as early as late-February when we start to see small glimpses of spring. I hope this post inspires you to do the same so you can enjoy the warmer weather and sunshine. Let me know in the comments what other ideas you have to refresh your patio!
