Update your furniture with this simple, quick, affordable hack: replacing hardware! This is one of my favorite things to do when I want to refresh outdated furniture without buying new pieces.
Swapping out handles, knobs, and pulls can completely transform a piece, giving it an updated, stylish appearance without the need for paint or major tools. Here’s how easy it is to change the hardware on your furniture and a few tips to help you get started.
Why Replace Furniture Hardware?

Updating your furniture hardware can make a big impact without a large effort! The right knobs or pulls can transform a boring dresser into a glamorous piece. Whether your style is vintage, modern, rustic, or coastal, you can find hardware to fit any style. Replacing hardware allows you to change the look of furniture without committing to a full overhaul.
How to Replace Drawer Hardware

Start by selecting the new hardware you want to add to the furniture. The easiest method is to measure the current drawer pull sizes and purchase the same size of new pulls. This will reduce the need for patching and drilling.
Drawer pulls are sized by hole-to-hole length. To capture the correct size, remove the current hardware and use a ruler to measure the center of each hole to one another.
My favorite places to search for hardware are Hobby Lobby, Amazon, and Anthropologie!
Once you’ve picked out your new hardware, the only tool you’ll likely need is a screwdriver. Unscrew the old hardware from the dresser or furniture piece.
Tip: Keep old hardware and screws as you may find a use to repurpose them later!
Line up the new hardware with the existing holes and screw into place with the screwdriver. Check to ensure the new hardware feels secure in place.
And that’s it! Now you have a transformed piece of furniture simply by updating the hardware. This is an easy, affordable hack that you can do with any furniture you have!
Things to Consider when Updating Furniture with New Hardware
- Durability – when updating knobs and handles on furniture that gets a lot of daily use, be mindful of the material and durability. You’ll want something that will hold up with time!
- Mix and Match – one of my favorite dressers in my home has two different types of knobs – one set on the top drawers and a different set on the bottom two dressers. Be creative in how you can mix and match hardware styles to create a unique look!
- Reuse and recycle – hardware can be repurposed and reused on different pieces of furniture so don’t throw it out once you remove it. Also, you often can find hardware at thrift stores or Facebook Marketplace for a good bargain!
- Paint – Consider using Rub n Buff to update the finish color and make the hardware look new again.
