Living by the coast, I love to scour the beaches for seashells! I’ve found over the years my shell collection has grown pretty large. So naturally I try to find ways to display the unique shells throughout my traditional coastal decor without making my home feel like a beach house. Yes, I live near the beach but I don’t want it to be coasted with seashells.
If you live near or far from the beach, these 9 seashell decorating tips will help you display the shells you find from the ocean in your home.
The 9 Best Ideas to Decorate with Seashells
Hang a Seashell Wreath
Hang a shell wreath on your front door for an inviting, coastal look this summer! Seashell wreaths come in different varieties and designs to fit your curb appeal. Here are some of my favorite seashell wreaths:
- Spring and Summer Seashell Wreath from Amazon ($60)
- William Sonoma Beached Fleur De Sel Wreath ($60)
- Grandin Road Starfish Wreath ($70)
Add Shells to a Clear Flower Vase
Place a smaller vase on the inside of a larger clear vase. Then add shells around the outside of the smaller vase for a touch of beachy vibes! This is a super easy DIY seashell decor idea that you can use as a centerpiece or accent in any room.
Tip: Use glass beads inside the smaller vase to keep the flowers in place.
Make Shell Candles
Make your own shell votive by pouring wax into the inside of a shell, or purchase some to put out with your classy coastal decor. How cute are these scallop shell votives from Etsy!? I love to light these little votives when we are hosting! They are such a conversation piece.
There are also plenty of ways to decorate with shells using candles. I also love these oyster shell votive holders!
Line a Picture Frame with Shells
If you find yourself with a bunch of smaller seashells, a great way to put them to use is to glue them to a picture frame. Use hot glue to add a dab of glue and hold onto the frame until dry. Display your favorite beach trip memories or a coastal painting in the frame!
Display Seashell Garland
I love displaying wooden bead and shell garland throughout my home! I put them on coffee table books, hang around lamps, and add to centerpieces. Shell garland adds just a touch of coastal without going overboard!
Arrange Seashells in a Bowl
If you have some unique shells, display them in a simple bowl on a coffee table or accent table. Rare finds should be displayed in the open! Grab a rattan basket or ceramic bowl and place enough shells in the bowl to fill it up. Style it with a candle, coffee table books, plants, and any other decor you have around!
Add Shell Napkin Rings to Your Tablescape
If you have 6-8 shells of the same size, make your own napkin rings by gluing the shells to a nakin holder. I made these oyster shell napkin rings using rattan napkin holders from Amazon and small oyster shells I found at the beach. You can use any type of ring holder or shell for these to make a statement on your tabletop decor!
Use a Shell as a Ring Dish
Add a shell to a guest bedroom or bathroom as a place for guests to put their rings and jewelry. Leave the shell raw or paint the edges with gold leaf paint! Bigger and deeper shells work best for a jewelry holder.
Seashell Wall Decor
Create your own shell wall hanging with shells you find at the beach by gluing them to a foam board. Add small pearls or sand to the display to fill in any white areas. Frame your masterpiece and remove the glass from the frame so the shells are exposed.
When is the best time to look for seashells?
The best time to look for shells is first thing in the morning before the beach gets busy. Low tide is best if you can catch it in the morning because all the shells wash up on shore. For those of us who live by the beach, I find the offseason to be the best time to find some real gems of shells.
Any shell that you find at the beach is beautiful and unique in its own way! That is what I love about hunting for shells – they are all a little bit different.
